Job club offers fresh hope to long-term unemployed

15th January 2017

People looking to escape long-term unemployment are being urged to join a new job club which is being launched by one of Worcester Foodbank’s partner organisations.

Volunteers from All Saints Church in Worcester are preparing to host the city’s first Christians Against Poverty (CAP) job club on Thursday, January 26.

The free course promises to provide job seekers with the skills and confidence they need to find a way back into the workplace.

Debt charity CAP has already helped more than 1,000 people return to work through its courses which are held in 163 towns and cities across the country.

Its job clubs are up to seven times more successful than some government-commissioned work schemes.

Grahame Lucas, Worcester Foodbank Manager, said: “If we’re going to eradicate food poverty in our city we have to tackle the root causes and long-term unemployment is a problem for many of our clients.”

“CAP has a proven track record of helping people back into work so we would really encourage anyone struggling with unemployment to sign up for the course.”

The eight-week course provides those looking for work with essential skills and abilities, such as CV writing, interview technique and the value of volunteering. Each person is also given one-to-one coaching to develop their strengths and identify other opportunities, such as volunteering or a college course.

The club will run weekly starting from Thursday, January 26 at 10.30am in St Helen’s Church, Fish Street, Worcester.
