Generous shoppers at Waitrose donated enough food to provide 800 meals to hungry people and families that cannot afford to feed themselves.
Customers at the London Road store handed over more than 750 kilos of food to Worcester Foodbank as volunteers carried out their first ever collection at the supermarket on Saturday (19 August).
The stock boost comes at a crucial time for the Lowemoor-based charity as it battles to support the growing number of families pushed into crisis over the summer holidays by the absence of free school meals.
Grahame Lucas, Worcester Foodbank Manager, said: “It was a brilliant team effort by our volunteers and Waitrose’s amazing staff and customers. Summer is a particularly challenging time for struggling parents that rely so heavily on free school meals. These donations will go a long way to helping us meet the growing demand for emergency food.
Waitrose has a permanent collection bin near to the store’s checkouts where customers can leave donations for foodbank.
