Worcester Foodbank has joined forces with a city toy shop in an effort to bring a smile to the faces of hundreds of children living in poverty this Christmas.
The charity’s Christmas Toy Appeal is being supported by The Entertainer on the Shambles for the second successive year.
The store has set up a collection point where people can donate gifts to children whose families are forced to turn to foodbank over the festive season. The Entertainer has started the ball rolling by generously donating some of its own toys, as well as handing over gift vouchers that the appeal’s organisers can exchange for more presents during the countdown to Christmas.
Last year more than 170 children living in food poverty woke up on Christmas Day to find a surprise present provided through the annual appeal – but foodbank wants to help even more families this December.
Toy project manager, Cary Taylor, said: “It’s difficult to imagine just how heart-breaking it must be for a child to wake up on Christmas Day feeling hungry and with an empty stocking.”
“The people of Worcester are extraordinarily generous and we know that with their support we can make Christmas special for children who can only dream of experiencing the celebrations most of us will enjoy.”
Shoppers can leave their donations of toys in the basket behind the counter at The Entertainer store, or bring them directly to Worcester Foodbank in Lowesmoor Wharf. The charity’s warehouse is open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 11am to 2pm.
